AMIA Fellowship Match Information

Eligibility: prior to appointment in the program, each fellow should have completed an ACGME-accredited residency program, an AOA approved residency program, a program with ACGME International (ACGME-I) Advanced Specialty Accreditation, or a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC)-accredited or College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC)- accredited residency program located in Canada. Further information regarding eligibility is outlined in the GME Policy and Procedure Manual (link to the GME Policy and Procedure Manual).

Exceptions to the above eligibility may apply via specific American board of medical specialties (ABMS) member boards as outlined in the (link to ACGME program requirements for informatics).  For example, the American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM) pathway allows surgical residents who have completed education and training in an ACGME-accredited fellowship in clinical informatics to sit for the ABPM’s Initial Certification Examination in clinical informatics prior to obtaining primary certification in surgery from the American Board of Surgery. Candidates seeking such an exception should inquire with the program prior to application.

Stipends and Benefits:

Clinical Informatics fellows receive the standard University of Kentucky Graduate Medical Education physician stipend based on postgraduate year. For the 2026-2027 academic year, PGY4 (first year) and PGY5 (second year) UK GME stipend rates are posted on the GME website. Benefits are outlined here.

Clinical Practice and additional compensation:

Fellows who have already completed a residency or fellowship program will devote up to 20% of their time to clinical practice in the specialty in which they are board-eligible or board-certified. Compensation for this clinical effort will be based on the applicable attending physician rate and may vary by specialty, qualifications, credentialing requirements, and participating department policies. This compensation is in addition to the standard UK GME fellowship stipend.

Fellows who have not yet completed a residency and are not yet board eligible or board certified in a specialty (eg surgical residents completing the fellowship as a ‘gap year’ during their surgery residency)  are not eligible for additional compensation.
