POCUS Track

The University of Kentucky Pulmonary and Critical Care Program offers two routes for ultrasound training in addition to our standard curriculum. This includes a nine-month longitudinal track which covers advanced concepts in cardiac, resuscitative, thoracic and abdominal modalities. This includes small group proctoring, over 40 articles of primary literature review and six hours of asynchronous video lecture.  Hands on training is on standardized patients and a high-fidelity simulator, proctored by ultrasound fellowship trained physicians.  This track prepares fellows to pass the Critical Care Echo Boards sponsored by the American Society of Echocardiography.

In addition, we offer one- and two-week intensive ultrasound selectives. In these selectives, the fellow transitions concepts learned in the classroom and hands on sessions to the bedside in critically ill patients. Fellows serve as an ultrasound resource to the ICU teams performing as needed ultrasounds.  Fellows spend one on one time scanning on patients and performing image review.  After completing the selective, the fellow will be eligible for a statement of competency for future credentialing needs.
