Our seven basic science departments, 18 clinical departments, and multiple centers are addressing critical questions in biomedicine, including in signature areas such as drug addiction and abuse, diabetes and obesity, cancer, cardiovascular, and neuroscience, and in emerging areas like infectious disease and lung disease. At the UK College of Medicine, our faculty regularly collaborate across both clinical and basic science specialties to conduct breakthrough research. For nearly 20 years, teams in the College of Medicine have studied the axolotl — a type of salamander native to Mexico — due to its ability to regenerate body parts, including limbs, tail, and spinal cord.
