Nephrology Fellowship Tracks

This traditional two-year general nephrology program is designed for fellows pursuing careers in both clinical practice and academic medicine. Fellows gain broad experience managing a wide range of kidney diseases in both inpatient and outpatient settings, with progressive responsibility for the care of acutely and chronically ill patients. Through this continuity, trainees develop a deeper understanding of the natural history of renal diseases and the effectiveness of various therapeutic approaches. Fellows also participate in a variety of educational seminars and conferences. The goal of the program is to provide a comprehensive foundation in clinical nephrology, preparing graduates to confidently evaluate and manage a full spectrum of renal conditions.

This combined program provides integrated training in both nephrology and critical care medicine. Fellows complete 24 months of nephrology training alongside 12 months of critical care training in collaboration with the UK College of Medicine Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. The curriculum emphasizes a seamless blend of both disciplines through shared faculty, educational experiences, and clinical rotations. Upon completion, fellows are eligible for board certification in both nephrology and critical care medicine.

This track provides practicing physicians the opportunity to pursue nephrology training while continuing to work as hospitalists at UK Chandler Hospital. Although this pathway extends the overall duration of training, it offers a flexible option for physicians to advance their specialization while maintaining their professional responsibilities and income.

This track offers focused training in the procedural aspects of nephrology, with an emphasis on dialysis access and related interventions. Fellows gain hands-on experience in procedures such as dialysis catheter placement, kidney biopsy, and management of vascular access complications, along with training in imaging and ultrasound guidance. The goal is to develop the technical skills and clinical judgment needed to perform interventional procedures and improve patient outcomes.
