Strong Commitment to Education

The division of hospital medicine plays an integral role in medical education at all levels. In fact, members of the division have won multiple teaching awards in recent years, indicating their strong commitment to education. To continue to build on these strengths, the division offers faculty development initiatives specifically geared towards developing teaching skills.

Resident Education

Hospitalists are responsible for a large portion of resident education in the various internal medicine residencies at UK: categorical medicine, primary care, and medicine-pediatrics. Hospitalists attend on five teaching teams at UK's Chandler and Good Samaritan hospitals. They participate in the morning report and noon lecture conferences and have been some of the most popular speakers. They are also involved in mentoring residents on scholarly activities such as case vignettes and research abstracts submitted to regional and national meetings. Recently, a hospitalist training track was started for PGY-3 residents which has provided opportunities for mentoring residents who are planning careers in hospital medicine.

Medical Student Education

UK has the longest internal medicine clerkship in the nation, so hospitalists at UK play a major role in the education of third-year students. Many hospitalists also serve as leaders of FIRM groups, a portion of the third-year clerkship in which students hone their clinical skills in a small group setting. They also serve as key clinical teachers for the robust acting internship in inpatient medicine in which fourth-year students are placed in the role of intern.
