Two Year Hospital Medicine Fellowship Program

Two Fellowship Tracks:  Executive Leadership Track and Educator Track


Executive Leadership Track

The fellow will complete a master's of health administration or a master's of business administration. The fellow will gain knowledge and real-world experience in leadership skills including strategic planning, value-based care requirements, utilization review, and documentation/billing requirements. Graduating from this program puts you on an administrative leadership career path.  The executive leadership track is directed by Paula Bailey, MD, MHA. 

MA in Business Administration OR MA in Health Administration

A master's degree in business administration OR a master's degree in health administration. The tuition for the degree will be at no cost to the fellow.

14.6 Weeks/Year of Clinical Service on Direct Care Teams

The service will be a mix of day-time ward service with limited to no admitting responsibilities in both the large, tertiary care hospital and the smaller, lower acuity hospital, evening admitting service, and night cross-cover service. There is a possible option of service time on the orthopedic co-management service and the addiction medicine consulting service. 

Hands-On Experience

  • Working with the division of hospital medicine leaders to understand the budget building process, challenges of scheduling for a large hospital medicine group, and building/maintaining a productive co-management service.
  • One-on-one feedback and small group sessions with the clinical documentation specialist to gain insight and knowledge of CMI/SOI, aLOS, and how that affects national rankings as well as how documentation can make or break this process.
  • Sitting in on division leadership meetings, division financial meetings, unit medical director meetings, and occasionally medical center chiefs meetings. 

Presenting at Division Grand Rounds and Division Journal Club

You will receive direct feedback to improve your presentation skills.

Monthly Joint Faculty Development Sessions with the Fellows from the Educator Track

  • Year One Sessions: Protected Time and Promotion, Mentorship and Coaching, Billing and Coding, Abstract Writing, How did you get there, Effective PowerPoints, Effective Presentations, Clinical Reasoning and Rounding Efficacy, Setting Expectations and Feedback, Communication Skills, Patient Safety and Error Disclosure, and Goal Setting.
  • Year Two Sessions:  Team Building, Patient Communication, Patient Safety, Leading a Meeting, Conflict Resolution, Change Management, 360 Feedback and Leadership Styles, Talking to Leadership, Structuring Quality Improvement with the Goal of Publication, Advanced Medical Education Skills: Clinical Reasoning, Diagnosing the Learner, and Small Group Teaching. 

Monthly Meetings with the Program Director, Dr. Paula Bailey, and Quarterly Mentorship Committee Meetings

There will be monthly meetings with the program director, Dr. Paula Bailey, and quarterly mentorship committee meetings to discuss progress in the fellowship and future career goals. 


Educator Track

The fellow will complete a master's of instructional systems design or a master's of research methods in education. The fellow will gain knowledge regarding teaching skills and get to observe seasoned educators during bedside and small-group teaching. In turn, they will get feedback from mentors and core faculty during bedside teaching, small-group teaching, and large-group presentations. Graduating from the educator program puts you on a leadership in medical education career path. The educator track is directed by Jagriti Chadha, MD. 

The fellows will be connected with mentors in their respective areas.

MS in Instructional Systems Design OR Research Methods in Education

14.6 Weeks/Year of Clinical Service

Six of those weeks will be on teaching teams with a mix of two hospital experiences and an experience on the consult service.

Field Experience/Internship (this will be counted as an elective in both MS degrees)

  • Observe and be observed for bedside teaching 
  • Observe and be observed for small group teaching
  • Present at Grand Rounds and Journal Club meetings, receive feedback on presentation skills

24 Faculty Development sessions

Three monthly mentorship meetings on guidance related to creating a teaching portfolio, quality improvement, and other career development opportunities.
