Our Community

Our faculty hail from a variety of background and fields, which is a key asset to our programs. Nephrology-critical care, emergency medicine-critical care, sleep medicine, and traditional pulmonary-critical care are just some of our histories. Faculty are academically active, expert educators who value fellow development and mentorship. We are proud of our fellows and the skills they develop. At graduation, they are skillful clinicians, expert proceduralists, master educators, and confident team-leaders.Our department, division, and wider university and health-care communities value diversity, equity, and inclusion. On the wards, we encourage patient-centered language, the nonjudgmental treatment of substance use disorders, and consideration of social determinants of health.

Our Mission

Our fellowships are guided by two important missions:

1. Developing well-rounded, compassionate, expert clinicians with the clinical, procedural, teaching, and leadership skills necessary for excellence in diverse academic and non-academic careers.

2. Providing fellows at all phases of training with personalized career development, mentorship, and support within a warm and welcoming community.

Vision and Values

We see medicine as a calling and the academic environment as an unparalleled privilege. We aim to put the “fellowship” back into fellowship by fostering community through a variety of methods, including innovative didactic education styles, out-of-work social and educational activities, and a fellow-driven curriculum. UK Chandler Hospital serves as a quaternary referral center for the state of Kentucky, where it is the #1 rated institution by US News and World Report. We aim to make the most of this unparalleled educational opportunity, serving the “sickest of the sick”, valuing the diversity of a wide referral population, and developing expertise in the full spectrum of pulmonary and critical care pathophysiology served here.

Parental Support

In addition to generous vacation, holiday, and sick paid leave, our fellowships support the University’s flexible parental leave policies for residents and fellows. It is our goal to "make your fellowship work for you" to allow fellows the necessary time and support to enjoy new parenthood.

Well-being

Fellow well-being is a key factor in the success of our programs that our program leadership team monitors and promotes. The University of Kentucky  Office of Graduate Medical Education has several wellness resources. In addition, the program nominates a wellness chief to organize multiple wellness events throughout the year. The program structure also incorporates features like the “haircut half-day” on several rotations to allow fellows to catch up on life outside work.
