Comprehensive Diagnosis and Management

The division of nephrology, bone, and mineral metabolism serves as a major referral center for central and southeastern Kentucky. Our team includes 20 faculty members, 11 advanced practice providers, and 6 trainees who deliver highly specialized clinical care across both inpatient and outpatient settings.

We provide comprehensive diagnosis and management for a wide range of conditions, including but not limited to:

  • Chronic kidney disease
  • Acute kidney injury
  • Glomerular diseases and vasculitis
  • Cancer-related kidney diseases (Onconephrology)
  • Cardiorenal metabolic syndrome
  • Resistant hypertension
  • Metabolic management of kidney stones
  • Chronic kidney disease–mineral and bone disorders
  • Primary and secondary osteoporosis
  • Genetic bone disorders
  • Metabolic assessment of bone fractures
  • Renal transplantation

Our facilities feature state-of-the-art dialysis and extracorporeal therapies, including continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) and therapeutic plasma exchange. The Interventional Nephrology Team performs more than 100 procedures each month related to dialysis vascular access, peritoneal dialysis catheter placement, and kidney and bone biopsies.

The division is home to the Hartmut H. Malluche, MD, Bone Research Laboratory, a world-renowned center that has received continuous funding for innovative bone and mineral metabolism research for over four decades. In addition, our faculty serve as Principal Investigators (PI) or Co-Investigators (Co-PI) in clinical and translational studies focusing on diabetic kidney disease, glomerular diseases (including lupus nephritis), vasculitis, kidney transplantation, and interventional nephrology.
