Clinical Informatics is a broad field, and fellows enter training with different clinical backgrounds, interests, and career goals. The fellowship combines a common core curriculum with individualized mentorship, scholarly work, and elective experiences designed to help each fellow develop a distinct professional path.

Your Career Plan Starts Early

Individualized career planning begins during the first rotation. During the first three months, fellows identify areas of clinical informatics interest, describe their desired career trajectory, and complete a structured self-assessment of their strengths, experience, and areas for further development.

These reflections form the basis of an Individualized Learning Plan that connects the fellow’s career goals with specific educational experiences, projects, and scholarly or quality-improvement work. The plan is revisited during each rotation and evolves as fellows gain experience and refine their interests.

Individualized Mentorship

Each fellow works with the Program Director and a faculty career mentor who helps translate career goals into practical opportunities throughout fellowship. Mentors help fellows identify appropriate experiences, address gaps in knowledge or skills, develop scholarly projects, and connect their informatics interests with meaningful improvements in patient care and health-system performance.

Build Your Area of Focus

The final portion of fellowship includes elective experiences that allow fellows to pursue greater depth in areas aligned with their goals. Options may include advanced clinical decision support, consumer health informatics, quality and safety, privacy and security, data analytics and visualization, predictive analytics, artificial intelligence and machine learning, advanced informatics research, and population health informatics.

Electives may be repeated for deeper specialization, and fellows may also develop individualized electives or pursue approved experiences with external organizations such as industry, government, or other informatics partners.
