The two-year Clinical Informatics Fellowship combines structured education with hands-on experience in clinical operations, health information technology, data and analytics, research, and organizational leadership. The core longitudinal curriculum is organized around three major experiences: Introduction to Clinical Informatics, Advanced Clinical Informatics, and the Scholarly/Research Activity Project. Fellows also complete elective training tailored to their individual career interests.

Throughout the fellowship, education includes didactics, faculty mentorship, operational and project-based experiences, and formal coursework. Fellows maintain clinical practice in their primary specialty while developing progressively greater responsibility for informatics projects and system-level initiatives.

Introduction to Clinical Informatics (ICI)

7 months

The Introduction to Clinical Informatics rotation establishes the foundation for the fellowship. Fellows develop an understanding of how clinical information systems support patient care and how technology, workflow, data, and organizational processes interact within a complex health system.

Training introduces core areas such as clinical documentation, computerized order entry, clinical decision support, patient-facing technologies, population health, quality and patient safety, privacy and security, and the use of EHR data to support clinical and operational decision-making. Fellows begin participating in informatics and IT governance and learn principles of project management, process improvement, change management, and system implementation.

During ICI, fellows also begin structured Epic education and gain practical experience with tools such as SlicerDicer and Reporting Workbench while working toward applicable Epic credentials and badges.

Advanced Clinical Informatics (ACI)

9 months

The Advanced Clinical Informatics rotation builds on the foundation established during ICI and moves fellows toward greater independence and leadership. Training expands into complex and specialized areas of informatics, including laboratory and pathology informatics, imaging, population health, quality and safety, advanced analytics and visualization, artificial intelligence and machine learning, clinical decision support, and privacy and security.

Fellows analyze clinical workflows, assess user and organizational needs, and use clinical and operational data to identify opportunities for improvement. They participate in the design, implementation, evaluation, and optimization of health information technology while working alongside clinicians, informaticians, analysts, operational leaders, and IT professionals.

As fellows progress, they increasingly serve as the clinical informatics lead for projects, helping connect frontline users with IT teams, guiding stakeholder engagement, supporting adoption, and evaluating the impact of implemented changes.

Scholarly/Research Activity Project

6 months

The Scholarly/Research Activity Project provides dedicated longitudinal experience in clinical informatics scholarship and applied research. Fellows develop projects that use informatics methods, digital health tools, and clinical data to answer meaningful questions and improve patient care or health system performance.

Fellows gain experience with the research lifecycle, including protocol development, feasibility assessment, data acquisition and validation, analysis, project evaluation, and preparation of scholarly products. Training may incorporate Epic data structures and analytics tools including Clarity, Caboodle, Chronicles, SlicerDicer, Reporting Workbench, and Cosmos, as well as institutional tools such as i2b2, TriNetX, REDCap, Qualtrics, and OnCore.

Projects are intended to move beyond theoretical exercises. Fellows are expected to translate findings into clinical, operational, or system-level impact and develop the skills needed to communicate results to both technical and clinical audiences.
