About Jong Cheol Jeong, PhD

Dr. Jong Cheol (JC) Jeong is an Assistant Professor at the University of Kentucky (UK) College of Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Biomedical Informatics, and a faculty member in the Markey Cancer Center (MCC) Cancer Research Informatics (CRI) Shared Resource Facility where he serves as Manager of the Cancer Research Data Commons (CRDC). His primary research interest is in the development and application of methods in translational biomedical informatics to better understand disease pathogenesis leading to the development of precision medicine and improved diagnostics and therapeutics for cancer patients. Dr. Jeong's research is focused on developing biomedical methods to identify new biomarkers for diagnosis, prognosis, and prediction of response to therapy in cancer using Big Data and Machine Learning approaches.

Research

  1. Biomedical Data Integration –  Dr. Jeong's research develops scalable informatics frameworks that enable investigators to integrate, harmonize, and analyze diverse biomedical data across institutional and research systems. His work includes developing Cancer Research Data Commons infrastructure, real-world data platforms, cohort discovery tools, and AI-based application developments that improve access to research-ready clinical information. These efforts facilitate multidisciplinary research and accelerate the translation of data into new scientific discoveries and improved patient outcomes.

  2. Cancer Informatics –  Dr. Jeong's research integrates clinical records, cancer registry data, molecular profiles, pathology findings, and other real-world data sources to support precision oncology and translational cancer research. His work enables researchers to identify target patient populations, investigate cancer disparities, evaluate outcomes, and generate clinically meaningful evidence from large-scale cancer datasets. Through collaborations across the Markey Cancer Center and the broader research community, he develops informatics solutions that support cancer prevention, treatment, survivorship, and population health research.

  3. Artificial Intelligence – AI has the potential to transform biomedical research and healthcare, but its success depends on access to high-quality, well-governed, and research-ready data. Dr. Jeong's research focuses on developing AI-enabled research infrastructure that supports the development, testing, validation, and deployment of machine learning and artificial intelligence models using real-world clinical and biomedical data. His work integrates electronic health records, cancer registry data, genomic and molecular data, pathology images, radiologic imaging, and other research resources into scalable environments that facilitate reproducible and collaborative AI research.
