The leading cause of cancer death in both men and women the United States is lung cancer. Unfortunately, Kentucky is home the highest incidence and death rate from lung cancer in the country. The American Cancer Society estimates that more than 4,900 Kentuckians will be diagnosed with a lung and bronchus cancer in 2019, with more than 3,200 succumbing to the disease.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 31, 2019) — The University of Kentucky College of Medicine is proud to share that two of our faculty members, Lindsay Ragsdale, MD, and Jessica McFarlin, MD, have been named Emerging Leaders in Hospice and Palliative Medicine by the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM). Dr. Ragsdale and Dr. McFarlin were among 40 health care professionals selected out of more than 120 nominations for the honor, which recognizes career accomplishments, involvement with the AAHPM, student and resident mentoring, and charitable work. The UK Polk Dalton Clinic is launching a new educational outreach program that will tackle tough topics, including a variety of issues identified as barriers to living healthy and happy lives.

The “First Fridays Family Education Series” will be held at the clinic on the first Friday of each month and will feature local experts who will speak on wide-ranging topics that influence individuals every day.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 25, 2019) — For the third consecutive year, the University of Kentucky has received INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine's highest honor — Diversity Champion. The oldest and largest publication and website in higher education today, INSIGHT Into Diversity had already recognized UK last week with a 2019 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award, also for the third year in a row.

(Sept. 17, 2019) — Despite the leaps and advances made in cancer treatments over the past few decades, sometimes patients still discover that they’ve exhausted all other available options. Tollesboro resident Jenn Highfield was far younger than most when she was diagnosed with colon cancer. With a strong family history of the disease – her father had been diagnosed with colon cancer at age 40 – she had been getting colonoscopies since age 30, decades before the recommended age of 50.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 16, 2019) — The University of Kentucky has been recognized as a "Great College to Work For" by The Chronicle of Higher Education for the second consecutive year.

Now in its 12th year, the Chronicle’s Great Colleges to Work For program recognizes colleges for best practices and policies based on a survey of faculty and staff. The annual survey is one of the largest and most comprehensive workplace recognition programs in higher education.

Grocery shopping can be overwhelming given the number of choices down every aisle and deciding between what is healthy or not can add to that challenge. It is possible to stick to a healthy meal plan – you just have to plan ahead. 

Here are grocery guidelines to reduce the amount of dietary fat, sugar, and salt that is associated with a higher risk for obesity, heart attack, diabetes and other diseases.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 6, 2019) — A true outpouring of human support — that is how Sen. Reggie Thomas described the treatment his wife received at the Markey Cancer Center. As she battled uterine cancer, alumna Lynda Morris Thomas was surrounded by people who cared about her and were invested in her recovery. “Everyone was so supportive of Lynda — she received outstanding care from the doctors and nurses — and they made her treatment more bearable,” Thomas said. “Everyone knows someone who has been touched by cancer.

The University of Kentucky College of Medicine's Faculty of Color Network (FCN) is hosting its first gala on Oct. 18. The College is spearheading the event, with the theme, “Undeniable, Uncompromising, Unstoppable: Celebrating Diversity in Medicine and the Community.” The recently established FCN is committed to scholarship and professional development, community engagement and advocacy.

(July 24, 2019) – The Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation (PFF) has announced the expansion of its nationwide Care Center Network with the selection of eight additional sites, including UK HealthCare's Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine Clinic. More than 200,000 Americans are living with pulmonary fibrosis, a devastating disease which causes progressive scarring in the lungs. Fifty-thousand new cases of PF are diagnosed each year. Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, the most common form of the disease, has no known cause and no known cure.

(June 24, 2019) — The Markey Cancer Center at Lexington Clinic began providing services on Monday to patients as part of an agreement between UK HealthCare and Lexington Clinic that enhances and expands outpatient cancer care throughout Central Kentucky. Medical oncology and infusion services at 1221 South Broadway in Lexington, and oncology, infusion and radiation therapy services at 793 Eastern Bypass, Suite G2 in Richmond, are now being provided collaboratively between the two organizations.
