Image Facilities and Resources Internal Medicine Fellowships Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Facilities and Resources Fellows in our programs enjoy a variety of training sites providing access to a diversity of patients, care environments, and pathophysiology. UK Albert B. Chandler Hospital The UK Albert B. Chandler Hospital is a quaternary referral center for the state of Kentucky and our main campus for fellowship training. This 945-bed facility (which is still growing!) now boasts 100 intensive-care beds and over 1,000,000 square feet of clinical space. Newly built, this modern facility is the only Level 1 trauma center in central and eastern Kentucky and the only regional NCI-designated cancer center. Fellows serve at UK Chandler in the medical ICU, cardiovascular ICU (including ECMO, cardiac support devices, and transplant), neuro ICU, trauma ICU, on the consult service, and in the procedure suite (boasting EBUS, navigational bronchoscopy, BLVR, and other interventional pulmonary procedures as well as standard bronchoscopy). Subspecialty education is offered here at the adult cystic fibrosis, interstitial lung diseases (ILD), COPD/asthma, pulmonary hypertension, and lung nodules clinics. Fellows enjoy continuity clinic at the Kentucky Clinic, a quaternary referral center for the care of patients with advanced lung disease. Image UK Good Samaritan Hospital The UK Good Samaritan Hospital is downtown Lexington’s community hospital with 180 beds. Fellows rotating here enjoy community pulmonary consults experiences as well as outpatient sleep medicine. Good Samaritan hospital, affectionately known to the fellows as “Great Sam,” is accessible via a shuttle services from the main campus which runs every 15 minutes. Image Veterans Affairs Medical Center The Veterans Affairs Medical Center is located adjacent to the UK Chandler Hospital and accessible via a sky bridge. This 199-bed facility offers comprehensive care for veterans. Fellows rotating here gain experience working with this unique population in a mixed-use ICU environment and with pulmonary consultations. This is the second site for UK fellows’ continuity clinic, providing an increase in patient diversity and experience within a community environment. Image Rockcastle Regional Hospital and Respiratory Care Center The Rockcastle Regional Hospital and Respiratory Care Center is home to the region’s top-rated Long-Term Ventilator Care Facility. Fellows in the PCCM program during the last year of training, accompanied by UK faculty, experience the environment of long-term ventilator care during their subspecialty elective. Image In addition, our fellowships are served by a full-time program coordinator, two program directors, two associate-program directors, and eight core faculty. Our faculty teach and provide fellow certification in the following procedures: Chest Tubes (open and seldinger) Thoracentesis Central Line Placement (comprehensive, including dialysis, arterial, and other lines) Percutaneous Tracheostomy (seldinger) Bronchoscopy, Including Advanced Bronchoscopy Developing Medical Educators UK’s large internal medicine residency program and medical school provide opportunities for the developing medical educator. Fellows routinely participate in the education of residents and students at all levels of training and generate educational scholarship from these experiences.
