X+Y Schedule
X+Y Schedule
We were among the first residency programs in the country to adopt an X+Y schedule and have been doing it for more than 15 years. Our program uses a 2+1 structure: two months of inpatient rotations followed by one month ambulatory training. Your outpatient month remain consistent throughout residency, providing a predictable schedule that makes planning easier and closely mirrors the continuity of real-world outpatient practice. Just as importantly, you'll never spend more than two consecutive months on inpatient services, creating a natural rhythm between inpatient and ambulatory training and allowing for a balance throughout the year.

Our curriculum offers a variety learning opportunities. During ambulatory blocks, residents participate in a protected Academic Half Day featuring case-based workshops, subspecialty content and simulation experiences. Four days each week include conference programming focused on high-yield, board-relevant topics, while Morning Report three times per week strengthens clinical reasoning through interactive case discussions. Residents also receive an introductory POCUS curriculum during intern year, with additional opportunities for an opt-in advanced ultrasound training focusing image acquisition. To prepare residents for boards, we offer an annual in-house board review series each spring that uses board-style questions and focused content review to reinforce key concepts and test-taking skills.

Multiple Hospital Training System
We provide training across several distinct clinical settings, giving residents exposure to a broad range of patients and healthcare systems. At Chandler Hospital and Good Samaritan Hospital, residents care for some of the region’s most complex and critically ill patients, benefiting from the high acuity that comes with being a major referral center. Residents also train at St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead, Kentucky, gaining experience in community hospital medicine. Additionally, residents rotate at the VA Medical Center, which offers a unique opportunity to work in an integrated health system working with our nation’s veterans. Together, these experiences provide the breadth and depth needed to prepare graduates for success in any career path or practice setting.
