Optimal Selection, Dose, and Duration

Antibiotic overuse contributes to the growing problems of Clostridium difficile infection and antibiotic resistance in health care facilities. Our antimicrobial management team (AMT) ensures the optimal selection, dose, and duration of antimicrobials that lead to the best clinical outcome for the treatment or prevention of infection while producing the fewest possible side effects and the lowest risk for subsequent resistance.

The AMT faculty and staff also manage the care of patients who require long-term intravenous antibiotics. The clinic treats a variety of conditions including osteomyelitis, septic arthritis, and endocarditis. Clinic staff work very closely with the UK Hospital Pharmacy and case managers, home health agencies, and UK orthopedic surgery and cardiology to ensure well-coordinated care.

There are 12 antibiotics that are restricted at UK to AMT services.
