A team from the University of Kentucky's Neurosurgery Residency Program was recently named the winner of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS) Academic Challenge Competition. Dr. Steve Grupke and Dr. Farhan Mirza were the two residents who competed in the game show style competition that took place at the 2015 CNS Annual Meeting in New Orleans, La. They competed among teams from 105 Neurosurgery programs in North America and one from New Delhi, India.

Only ten teams advanced to the semifinals. In the end, the UK neurosurgery residents triumphed over other teams to win the championship round. This is an incredible achievement by the UK team and will rightfully acknowledge the academic excellence of the UK Neurosurgery program,” said Dr. Phillip Tibbs, chair of the Department of Neurosurgery and director of the UK Spine Center.

Last year, Dr. Grupke and Dr. Mirza placed second during their first year at the competition. For this honor, the team was presented with a trophy and a cash prize for the UK Neurosurgery Residency Program.

The CNS Annual Meeting is the premier forum for exploring controversial and hot-button issues impacting the neurosurgical specialty and for learning about the most cutting-edge procedures, approaches, and technologies in the field.
