Learning Communities
The University of Kentucky College of Medicine utilizes a learning community system to ensure all medical students experience optimum professional development, career advising, and social connectedness and wellness during medical school. These communities consist of smaller cohorts of students grouped with designated faculty with whom students will develop a longitudinal relationship across their journey through medical school.
Lexington, Kentucky, is often referred to as the “Horse Capital of the World” for its storied history of producing and housing scores of champion race horses. In homage to this, each learning community – or “House” – bears the name of a breed of horse.
Along with helping enhance our students’ medical education experience, the UK College of Medicine hosts a variety of meetings and events for our learning communities to encourage teamwork, promote holistic wellness, and create a friendly, fun environment for our students as they face the challenges of medical school.
Our mission with learning communities is to:
- Foster a sense of community among students and faculty
- Develop students personally and professionally
- Provide academic advising, career exploration, and planning
