Well-Positioned for Interprofessional Health Care Education and Collaborative Research
Across the nation, UK is one of a few universities to have all 6 health science colleges (medicine, nursing, dentistry, pharmacy, public health, and health sciences) all on the same campus making it well-positioned for interprofessional health care education and collaborative research.
The Lexington campus has set the standard in medical training and launched regional campuses across the state to allow for continued implementation of its nationally recognized medical curriculum. It offers a single location where education, research, and clinical care are provided in a close network of facilities. This close proximity provides students with easy access to physician and research mentors.
In addition, the College is a recognized leader in biomedical research focusing on innovative, transformative, and collaborative discoveries that are able to be brought to the bedside. Through this approach, the institution is training our learners to become physicians that align evidence-based practice with the delivery of advanced care. Clinical Service and UK HealthCare Partners
The University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler Hospital that opened in 1962 is a 800-bed acute care hospital and the central unit of the UK HealthCare patient care enterprise. The hospital has central and eastern Kentucky’s only Level I trauma center, and handles the most severe traumas. It has the only Level IV neonatal intensive care unit in the area to treat the sickest infants. Offering the full range of services, the UK Chandler Hospital is the No. 1 hospital in Kentucky and the Bluegrass Region, according to U.S. News & World Report's Best Hospitals Rankings.
UK Good Samaritan Hospital is an acute-care facility with 180 licensed beds. Founded in 1888, the hospital has a long tradition of providing exceptional patient care in a community-hospital atmosphere. Its acquisition in July 2007 by UK HealthCare added the resources of a major health care system. With more than 600 clinical and ancillary staff and a medical staff of more than 600 physicians, UK Good Samaritan offers a broad range of health care services to meet the needs of the residents of central and eastern Kentucky.
Kentucky Children's Hospital is located within UK Hospital on the University of Kentucky campus in Lexington, Kentucky and is the only children's hospital in the region. The patients range in age from infants through adolescents and have a variety of illness and injuries. Kentucky Children's Hospital is able to treat the most critically ill children, as well as those with less severe illness or injury, and is home to the only Level IV neonatal intensive care unit in the area to treat the sickest infants. In April 2018, KCH unveiled the Makenna Foundation Welcome Center and opened the Betti Ruth Robinson Taylor Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, a 36,000 square foot, 70 bed facility.
UK Kentucky Clinic is the primary UK HealthCare outpatient clinic. Designed to provide total health care service within one location, more than 400 physicians and dentists in more than two dozen specialties are available, offering a wide range of primary and specialty care. It is located next to UK Albert B. Chandler Hospital and contains a multitude of clinics, x-ray facilities, clinical laboratories, and a pharmacy.
