The UK College of Medicine administers a scholarship program with a variety of awards. Scholarships are awarded based on an expansive list of criterion – some scholarships are awarded based on academic excellence or financial need, while others are established on specific criteria such as Kentucky, county of origin or planned medical specialty.

Awarded to fourth-year students for excellence in third-year clinical performance based on data compiled from evaluations across all clinical clerkships and scores from OSCE stations throughout third year.

Awarded to a first-year student and is renewable.

Averitt Scholarship Fund

Awarded to an entering first-year student and is renewable. Preference is given to a native of Fayette County.

Demonstrate a financial need. Must maintain good academic standing.

Residents of Boyle, Casey, Garrard, Lincoln, Mercer, and Rockcastle Counties, KY. Demonstrate a financial need.

Huang Family Scholarship in Medicine

Demonstrates a financial need and potential for academic success, must maintain good academic standing.

Awarded to an entering first-year Kentucky student who demonstrates academic excellence. This scholarship is renewable.

Awarded to a rising second-year Kentucky student with a minimum 3.0 GPA. A FAFSA required for consideration.

Byron Young, MD

Awarded to Kentucky student(s). A FAFSA is required

Hasan Family Scholarship

Awarded to a student in good academic standing, a resident of Kentucky, with a demonstrated unmet financial need.

Specialty or Criterion-Based Scholarships

There are various awards given to students based on specific criteria such as county of origin and career specialty interests. No application needed unless indicated otherwise.

Dr. Roger Darrell Akers Memorial

Awarded to entering first-year student, with preference given to residents of Floyd County. A FAFSA is required and this scholarship is renewable.

Peter Ardery

Awarded to third and/or fourth-year student who wishes to pursue a medical rotation in another country and has financial need. This scholarship is not renewable.

R. Quin Bailey, MD

Awarded to a first-year Kentucky student and is based on academic excellence, demonstrated financial need, and interest in the practice of Primary Care. 

Harry King and Nelle Buttermore

Awarded to an entering first-year student and is based on academic excellence and demonstrated financial need. A FAFSA is required and preference given to resident of Kentucky from an Appalachian county. 

Biz and Jackie Cain Family Medical Scholarship

Provides scholarship to student enrolled at the Northern Kentucky campus. Demonstrates a financial need. Must maintain good academic standing. Graduated high school from one of the following Kentucky counties: Boone, Kenton, Campbell, Pendleton, Grant.

Fermaglich Family Scholarship

One or both parents who have served or are serving in active duty for the United States Military. Demonstrate a financial need. Preference given to out of state student if multiple students are eligible.

Jonas Fields Minority Scholarship

Kentucky Resident enrolled in the College of Medicine. Award to minority students who demonstrates a financial need.

Dr. Robert and Linda Granacher Scholarship

Resident of Meade (preferred) followed by Breckenridge, Bullitt, Hardin Counties KY. Then Kentucky resident, if no student identified. Demonstrate a financial need.

Emily Neil Griggs Memorial

Awarded to a third or fourth-year student and is based on academic excellence, financial need and practice interest in Oncology. 

James F. Hile Medical

Awarded based on academic excellence, interest in general/family medicine (no actual service commitment required). This scholarship can be renewed.

Kentucky Medical Association Alliance Fund

This scholarship is based on academic excellence and preference is given to a resident of Kentucky with intent to practice in Kentucky (no actual service commitment required). 

Dr. W.C. and Sara McCauley

Awarded to second, third, or fourth-year medical students. This scholarship is based on academic excellence, financial need and preference is given to a resident of Woodford County. A FAFSA is required and the scholarship is not renewable.

Medical Center Enhancement Scholarship

May be awarded to medical students to promote diversity in the College of Medicine. Students must be in good academic standing.

J. Lester Miller

Awarded to an entering first-year student and is based on academic excellence, financial need, and preference is given to a resident of Madison County. A FAFSA is required and this is a two-year scholarship.

Paul E. Miller and Judith Sebastian-Miller Fellowship

Awarded to an entering first-year student who has a minimum 3.0 GPA, demonstrates financial need and preference is for a native of Fayette County or contiguous counties. A FAFSA is required and the scholarship is renewable

Charles G. Nichols, MD Endowed Scholarship

Awarded to residents of Pike, Floyd, Johnson, Breathitt, Leslie, Morgan, or Clay Counties in Kentucky with an interest in Family Care (preferably) or Primary care and in returning to the aforementioned counties who demonstrate a financial need.

Northern Kentucky Campus Scholarship

Provides scholarship to student enrolled at the Northern Kentucky campus. Demonstrates a financial need. Preference given to medical student(s) from Boone, Campbell, Kenton, Grant, Owen, Pendleton, Gallatin, Carroll, or Bracken Counties, Kentucky.

Ethelyn O'Neal Fellowship

Award to a first-year student, based on the following preferences:

  • Graduate of high schools in Union County with practice interest in the city of Sturgis in Union County;
  • Graduate of high schools in Union County with practice interest in Union County;
  • Graduate of high schools in Union County; or
  • Graduate of high schools in Crittenden, Webster or Hopkins counties with practice interest in any of the three counties.

Kevin Pearce M.D., RPLP Scholarship Fund

Provides scholarship to student enrolled in the RPLP program or other students who demonstrates an interest in rural medicine.

Robert E. Pennington, MD Scholarship Fund

Provides scholarship to student enrolled in the College of Medicine. Preference is given to students from Eastern Kentucky.

Michael D. Rankin, MD Community Scholarship

May be awarded to a medical student who is a resident of a rural county in Kentucky, with preference for Boyle, Casey, Garrard, Lincoln or Mercer counties, and who has an agricultural background. Students must have good academic performance and financial need. A FAFSA is required and the scholarship is renewable.

Dr. William P. (Bill) Riordan, Jr. Scholarship

Provides scholarship to students enrolled at the Bowling Green campus who demonstrate a financial need.

Walter J. Salmon, Sr. and Walter J. Salmon, Jr. Memorial

Awarded to an entering first-year student and is renewable. To be considered, the recipient required to complete a clinical rotation in nephrology during enrollment, however, no service commitment is required.

Ray and Lorena Gaye Salyer

Awarded to an entering first-year student and is based on academic excellence. Students should be a native of Kentucky from Madison, Breathitt or Johnson counties and demonstrate financial need. A FAFSA is required and the scholarship is renewable.

Dr. Eileen R. Scherl

Awarded to a rising fourth-year student who plans to practice internal medicine. 

Eloise C. Smith and Dr. E. Vernon Smith Medical Scholarship

Awarded to a medical student(s) based on academic excellence. Students should be a resident of Greenup County and commit a minimum of five service years of medical practice following completion of degree requirements and any post-doctoral training. Non-compliance of the scholarship agreement does require that the scholarship is repaid in full as a loan. Application required

David B. Stevens Medical Fellowship

Awarded to third and fourth-year students. The scholarship is based on academic excellence, financial need, and submission of letters of recommendation from Orthopaedic Surgery faculty members or research abstract. Application required

Dr. and Mrs. James A. Sutherland, Sr.

Awarded to a rising third-year student. Scholarships are based on academic excellence and demonstrated leadership ability in the College of Medicine. It is not renewable.

Helen R. Westman, MD

Awarded to an entering first-year Kentucky student with preference for women with financial need. A FAFSA is required and the scholarship is renewable.

United States Armed Forces Scholarships

U.S. Army Health Professions Scholarship Program

The U.S. Army has approximately 255 Health Professions Scholarship Program recipients for medical and dental school each year. The active duty obligation will be dependent upon the length of scholarship received.

Recipients can expect:

  • $20,000 sign-on bonus
  • 100% tuition and required academic fees for medical/dental school
  • Reimbursement for required books, required non-expendable equipment, and required licensing exams
  • Monthly stipend of $2,466 for 10.5 months each year (goes up each July)
  • Active duty pay as a 2nd Lieutenant six weeks each year

U.S. Air Force Health Professions Scholarship Program

The Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP) through the United States Air Force is awarded to a select group of medical students each year, who not only display great potential as a health care professional, but as a future leader in the United States Air Force. Below, are the basic eligibility requirements:

  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • Must have a desire to serve your country
  • Have a letter of acceptance into medical school
  • Be under the age of 38
  • Complete and pass military doctors physical
  • Have no major law violations

This scholarship pays full tuition; some fees, books, and supplies; plus a monthly stipend.
