The UK College of Medicine offers a variety of student organizations, clubs, and specialty interest groups for medical students to engage with peers, hone their professional skills, and explore specific interests within medicine during their educational experience. Involvement in these groups can help medical students develop into more well-rounded physicians.

Any student from any UK College of Medicine campus location may join a student organization, even if the student organization is located on a different UK College of Medicine campus.  Student organizations provide virtual options, when necessary.

Below is a list of active organizations approved by the Office of Medical Education. Each organization, specialty interest group, and club includes the name of a designated contact. General questions about student organizations can be sent to:

Neurosurgery Interest Group

The Neurosurgery Interest Group (NSIG) at the University of Kentucky serves as a hub for students passionate about neurosurgery, neurological sciences, and related fields. Our mission is to cultivate interest and provide students with the resources and opportunities to explore the intricacies of the brain, spinal cord, and nervous system from a surgical perspective.

Through a variety of hands-on workshops, including surgical simulation labs and anatomical dissections, members gain practical exposure to neurosurgical techniques and tools. We host guest lectures from leading neurosurgeons and neurologists who share their expertise, discuss cutting-edge research, and provide insights into the day-to-day life of a neurosurgeon. Members will also have the opportunity to engage in case discussions, attend research presentations, and participate in career development sessions, all designed to deepen their understanding of the field.

In addition to educational programming, NSIG offers robust mentorship opportunities. Our group connects students with faculty mentors and practicing neurosurgeons, creating pathways for shadowing experiences, research involvement, and guidance on navigating the medical school and residency application process.

Whether you’re a student just beginning to explore the possibility of a career in neurosurgery or someone already committed to the field, the Neurosurgery Interest Group provides a welcoming and supportive environment for growth and learning. We aim to inspire the next generation of neurosurgeons by fostering a community built on collaboration, curiosity, and professional development.

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Interest Group

Established in the late 1940s, the field of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) was born out of need to meet the unique needs of individuals facing the aftermath of severe injury and disease. These are patients returning from war, patients recovering from stroke, patients altered by life-changing events. As an interest group, we are devoted to learning about PM&R and promoting it's core belief: To improve the functional well-being of patients despite physical impairment and limitations. This is a relatively new and growing discipline, and our group invites your participation and your energy to help fuel the next generations of PM&R healthcare specialists. Please join us in this great cause!

Exercise and Medicine

Exercise in Medicine is a medical student-led interest group that aims to enhance physical health and well being not only for those within the College of Medicine but beyond for our current and future patients in Kentucky.

Our group was inspired by a nonprofit called Medals4Mettle that gathers volunteers to run distance races and donate their finisher’s medals to children who have demonstrated resilience and mettle despite illness/injury. Our medical students created our own version by running the Run the BlueGrass- Lexington at Keeneland! We chose to gift our medals to children battling orthopedic injuries at Shriners Hospital for Children in Lexington. Our goal through Exercise in Medicine is to host this event annually to give back to applaud and uplift patients and their families, give back to Shriners Hospital, and promote physical health within the College of Medicine to mitigate burnout.

We are a TEDx-style talk series and a student organization at University of Kentucky College of Medicine. We host events for speakers to share their stories of humanity in medicine. This is a wonderful avenue to connect medical students with residents, physicians, and administrators on a human level, removing the name tags of "student" and "faculty" and just becoming people relating to each other.
