As part of our LCME Update series, we are highlighting the people, programs, and processes that support student success across the College of Medicine. Standard 11 focuses on academic support, career advising, and the systems in place to help students progress successfully through medical school.
At the UK College of Medicine, students have access to a welcoming, student-centered network of academic support and career guidance across all campuses. Dedicated staff advisors provide proactive, personalized support throughout medical school — from early check-ins to workshops focused on study strategies, time management, and test-taking skills. Additional academic support is available through peer learning mentors, experienced medical students who offer free one-on-one and group tutoring in both virtual and in-person settings.
Career exploration and advising are integrated throughout the curriculum. The College’s Career Pathways program, built around the AAMC Careers in Medicine framework, connects students with learning community advisors, specialty-specific advanced development directors, clinical coaches, and assistant deans. Together, these mentors help students explore specialties, identify research and shadowing opportunities, select electives and away rotations, and prepare for residency applications and Match.
Student progress is monitored through consistent and transparent processes designed to support success and professional growth. The Student Progress and Promotion Committee (SPPC) reviews student performance thoughtfully and fairly, while clear policies and access to academic records help ensure accountability, transparency, and ongoing support.
These coordinated support systems reflect the college’s commitment to helping students thrive academically and professionally as they prepare to serve patients and communities across the Commonwealth and beyond. From orientation through residency preparation, students are supported every step of the way.
