As part of our LCME Update series, we are highlighting the programs and resources that support student success throughout medical school. Standard 12 focuses on the services and systems that promote student health, personal well-being, and a supportive learning environment.
At the UK College of Medicine, we recognize that student success depends on more than academic preparation and clinical training. Supporting students as whole people — mind, body and community — is essential to helping them thrive throughout medical school and develop into the resilient physicians Kentucky needs.
Students across all campuses have access to comprehensive health and mental health services, including preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic care through student health centers and trusted clinical partners. Mental health support is available through the University Counseling Center, the Woodland Wellness Center, and partnerships across our regional campuses to ensure students have access to high-quality care regardless of location. Excused absences for personal healthcare appointments and required vaccinations for clinical training further support student well-being and patient safety.
The college also promotes holistic wellness and connection through access to fitness facilities and student-led organizations focused on physical, mental, and social well-being. Groups such as Exercise in Medicine, ChefMed, MD+NBA, the Medical Student Pickleball Program and Resilient create opportunities for students to build community beyond the classroom. Recognizing that financial well-being is also an important component of overall wellness, the college is expanding resources in 2026 to support financial literacy and help students navigate the financial aspects of medical training and future practice.
Together, these resources reflect our commitment to creating a learning environment where students can thrive academically, personally and professionally. By supporting students from orientation to residency preparation, we are preparing compassionate, capable and resilient physicians to serve the Commonwealth and beyond.
