Darwin Conwell, MD, joined the University of Kentucky in 2022 as a professor and the Jack M. Gill Endowed Chair in Internal Medicine. Since then, he’s become a recognizable fixture of the UK College of Medicine and UK HealthCare.

Dr. Conwell knows that being a successful leader for the University of Kentucky College of Medicine’s largest department involves more than leadership meetings. It means being present. He is not just in the board room, but also in the clinic and the community alongside his team to address the state’s most pressing health care needs.

How does someone as busy as Dr. Conwell make time for everything? He lives and breathes by his calendar. And he has found clever ways to mix both his work and personal time.

He typically signs up for around 10 races in one year. Over the last year, he finished more than 15 5Ks – always proudly sporting a UK baseball cap.

Now, his department is lacing up too.

The UK College of Medicine Department of Internal Medicine is hosting its inaugural Miles for Medicine 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 9:00 a.m. ET at Coldstream Park in Northwest Lexington. The race is intended to foster community while raising funds to support the medical student-led Salvation Army Clinic (SAC).

About the Salvation Army Clinic
The SAC has been serving Lexington residents since 1986. Physicians and medical students volunteer their time to serve at the student-run clinic, which provides free medical services to residents of the Lexington Salvation Army women and children’s shelter, as well as unhoused persons in the Lexington area. It is one of the oldest, continuously operational, student-run free clinics in the United States.

The clinic currently has twice-weekly adult clinics, monthly pediatric and ophthalmology clinics, oral cancer screenings provided by ENT, and free weekly tobacco cessation groups. We also help patients sign up for insurance, get established with primary care and dental care, and connect them with other community resources.

The clinic is fully run by medical students with the support of volunteer physicians, pharmacists, and pharmacy students. The mission of SAC is to allow students to get early clinical exposure by assuming a leadership role in improving the health and well-being of the underserved populations in Lexington and to increase awareness of the social determinants of health while providing free medical services. Without the service and leadership of our volunteers, we would not be able to operate the clinic.  The Salvation Army Clinic is completely dependent on donations and grants. All monies raised will go towards the purchase of medications and supplies for the clinic.
