Dr. Zaki-Udin Hassan Named Chair of Anesthesiology
I am excited to announce that after an extensive national search by a committee of your peers and broad faculty input, Zaki-Udin Hassan, MBBS, MBA, FASA, has officially accepted the role of chair of the department of anesthesiology. This appointment will take effect July 1.
Dr. Hassan completed his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery at the University of London Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School. Following additional years of clinical training in England, he joined the University of Kentucky College of Medicine as an anesthesiology intern in 1996 prior to completing his residency, fellowship, and specialized training in liver transplant and cardiac anesthesia.
During his time at the UK College of Medicine, Dr. Hassan has served in many clinical, academic, and leadership roles – most recently, professor of anesthesiology, vice chair of the department of anesthesiology, director of liver transplant anesthesiology, and director of simulation for UK HealthCare.
As chair, he will continue to lead the department as part of a matrix organization which will require collaboration with other chairs and center directors. Dr. Hassan will foster the advancement of the college in its strategic plan goals; optimize recruitment and retention of diverse faculty through an equitable process; and work to develop interdisciplinary research and further pursue extramural funding.
Dr. Hassan has been integral to the department, and we are confident in his abilities to lead the faculty and staff successfully while driving the missions of the College of Medicine and UK HealthCare. He will continue to be a great asset for the group, and together we will continue to have positive impact.
As grateful as we are for Dr. Hassan’s leadership, we are also grateful to Dr. Randall Schell, MD, who has successfully led the department through a time of transition. Dr. Schell’s commitment and partnership has been invaluable.
