On behalf of the Office of Faculty Affairs and Development, the University of Kentucky College of Medicine is pleased to announce that Sally Mathias, MD, and Sylvia Ofei, MD, MPH, have been selected as fellows for the 2021 Bluegrass Higher Education Consortium Academic Leadership Academy (BHEC-ALA).

Dr. Mathias and Dr. Ofei will join a total of 63 faculty members at the University of Kentucky who have previously participated in this regional academic leadership program.

Dr. Mathias is an assistant professor in the department of neurology, epilepsy track. She received her medical degree at Father Muller Medical College in Mangalore, India, followed by a residency at the University of Kentucky and a fellowship in clinical neurophysiology at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.

Dr. Ofei is an assistant professor in the department of pediatrics with a specialty in pediatric gastroenterology, as well as medical director of patient experience at Kentucky Children’s Hospital. She earned her medical degree at Wright State University and completed her residency and fellowship at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. Dr. Ofei is also co-founder of the Faculty of Color Network, an organization in the UK College of Medicine that is undeniable, uncompromising, and unstoppable in its pursuit of diversity and inclusion.

The BHEC-ALA is a consortium of the 12 colleges and universities in the central Kentucky region. Its purpose is to encourage faculty to consider career paths in leadership and to provide mentorship in developing the skills necessary for effective institutional leadership.
