The AIRP course is a 4 week course organized by the American College of Radiology (ACR), that all 3rd year radiology residents from across the United States and the world attend. Traditionally, it's held live during September-October in Washington, D.C., but in 2020 it was held online due to COVID-19.

New Search Engine Capabilities Can Expose Patient Identifiers Thought to Be Anonymized Search engines can now index patient identifiers in slide presentations that were previously believed to have been de-identified. RSNA, ACR and SIIM urge radiologists and allied professionals to use the guidance below to help ensure that no protected health information (PHI) exists in their presentations. Organizations that may host such content should ensure that it is appropriately de-identified.

Xiaoquin (Jennifer) Wang, MD, from the Division of Women’s imaging has arranged a research agreement with an artificial intelligence company, Bunkerhill Medical. BunkerHill is a Y Combinator-backed startup out of Stanford University’s Artificial Intelligence in Medicine and Imaging (AIMI) center.

Responsible Conduct of Research or RCR is, according to an NIH definition, "the practice of scientific investigation with integrity. It involves the awareness and application of established professional norms and ethical principles for all activities related to scientific research." Our Vice President of Research, Lisa Cassis, has mandated that all faculty and students who, in anyway, are involved in research take this training. Similarly, Robert S. DiPaola, MD, Dean of the College of Medicine also has asked faculty and trainees to take this training.

The FINDERS Alliance team combines clinical experts in Epilepsy, the analysis of EEG waveform, and neuroimaging. It brings together energetic and ambitous faculty from multiple departments and even from multiple colleges within our university. The FINDERS alliance team is ably lead by Brian Gold, PhD from the department of Neuroscience and Meriem Bensalem Owen, MD from the department of Neurology. Dr. Gold is an experienced researcher who leads an active research effort using advanced MR imaging techniques to study Alzheimer's disease. Dr.

On Friday, September 18th, 2020, the Department of Radiology hosted David A. Bluemke, MD, PhD and Jeffrey S. Klein, MD,  the editors of Radiology and Radiographics respectively. Drs. Bluemke and Klein came to our department, via zoom, as part of the RSNA visiting editors program. Originally they were to visit us in March just at the start of travel restrictions imposed by the surging COVID-19 epidemic and their visit was cancelled.

In late 2019, Dr. Flavius Raslau, from the Department of Radiology, initiated a multidisciplinary collaboration that leverages the strengths of the Kentucky Neuroscience Institute's (KNI) Level IV Comprehensive Epilepsy Program and the research expertise housed at the Magnetic Resonance Imaging & Spectroscopy Center (MRISC). This initiative brings together clinical collaborators from UK College of Medicine (radiologists, neurologists, neuropsychologists, neurosurgeons), MRISC scientists (neuroscientists/neuroimagers, physicists).

University of Kentucky radiology resident Dr. Leanna Lin likes to use her strength for good causes.

This Saturday, Lin has organized an event called Deadlifts Against Domestic Violence, a powerlifting-style deadlift competition hosted by The Moco Gym in Mount Sterling, Ky. All the money received with sales and registration fees will benefit GreenHouse17, an advocacy agency committed to ending intimate partner abuse in families and the community.

On Saturday August 26th, 2017 the University of Kentucky Department of Radiology hosted an inaugural medical student fair, RAD FLiCKs (Radiology Medical Student Fair hosted by the University of Louisville, University of Cincinnati, and University of Kentucky). Over 50 students attended from UK, U of L, UC and KYCOM and spent the day interacting with over 20 faculty members from the three different campuses. In the morning, students had the opportunity to hear directly from each of the school’s department chair and learn about some common misconceptions about practicing radiology.

On April 12, 2017, the Department of Radiology at the University of Kentucky hosted Daniel Mollura, MD, CEO and founder of RAD-AID International, at an Advanced Imaging Symposium open to the College of Medicine and UK HealthCare communities. He delivered an inspiring and thoughtful presentation on the status of Radiology in the developing world and shared the impressive achievements of RAD-AID in the fields of Radiology and Radiation Oncology.

In October 2016, a team of UK Department of Radiology faculty radiologists, Drs. Francesca Beaman, Joseph Owen, Margaret Szabunio and Marianna Zagurovskaya (team leader), traveled to the developing country of Kazakhstan to enrich Radiology education. They conducted a 10-day multi-subspecialty Radiology seminar for radiologists-in-training and practicing radiologists. The seminar was hosted by The Kazakh Institute of Oncology and Radiology (KIOR) in the city of Almaty. It was initiated by Dr. Zagurovskaya under the auspices of the RAD-AID Kazakhstan Chapter started in 2016.

On June 1, 2016, the 3rd Annual Department of Radiology Quality & Safety Forum was held in the Pavilion A Lobby. The Forum featured seven Quality Improvement poster projects from the Department of Radiology working in conjunction with UKHC Office for Value and Innovation in Healthcare Delivery (OVIHD). Thanks to the Chief Medical Office and Dr. Phillip Chang who provided snacks and refreshments for attendees. Competition: Each poster was judged by a secret panel of judges selected by Dr Chang. While all the projects and teams were winners, only one could be selected. Dr. W.

On Thursday, September 1, 2016, the Department of Radiology and the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine jointly hosted James H. Thrall, MD, Chair Emeritus of the Department of Radiology, Massachusetts General Hospital and Distinguished Taveras Professor of Radiology, Harvard Medical School. During his visit, Dr. Thrall gave two excellent presentations.

The American College of Radiology has awarded University of Kentucky Department of Radiology with its Gold Seals in all modalities of Accreditation, which recognizes the highest level of imaging quality and safety.

  Resident Sarah Deraney, MD, won the first place Poster or Exhibit Trainee Prize at the Annual Meeting of Association of University Radiologists (AUR) in New Orleans in April. 

Her poster was titled “Pediatric Head CT Protocol Optimization: Simultaneously Lowering Radiation Dose and Eliminating Artifacts.” It is the same poster that won the 1st Annual Department of Radiology Quality & Safety Forum last May.
