One Year Fellowship


The UK College of Medicine Department of Radiology is pleased to offer a one year fellowship in cardiovascular and thoracic radiology (CV andTR).  Eligible candidates will have completed an ACGME-accredited (or equivalent) diagnostic radiology residency training program and should be board-eligible (or certified) by the American Board of Radiology. All fellows must be eligible for medical licensure in the state of Kentucky.

Well-Versed in Thoracic, Vascular and Cardiac Imaging

This fellowship prepares graduates to be well versed and efficient in interpreting imaging related to all aspects of thoracic, vascular and cardiac imaging. Training includes rotations in interpretation of chest radiography, chest CT and MRI, CT and MR angiography (non-neuroradiology), cardiac CT and cardiac MRI. Fellows also have the opportunity to spend elective time in other sections of the radiology, including interventional radiology, if interested in thoracic procedures such as lung biopsies.

The CV and TR fellow plays an important role in the weekly multidisciplinary lung cancer conference and is expected to present cases on behalf of the section.  Additionally the fellow has the opportunity to participate in other multidisciplinary conferences including those on interstitial lung disease (ILD), adult and pediatric complex vascular malformations, lung cancer screening, and advanced cardiac imaging [structural cardiac disease, advanced transcatheter valve interventions (TAVR/TMVR), adult and pediatric congenital heart disease]. 

The fellow is also expected to play an important role as a member of the team as an educator and researcher.  In support of these pursuits, fellows are provided with faculty mentorship, instruction in research design/analytic methods, and one-half day of dedicated academic time per week (on average). Fellows are also provided with the opportunity to attend a national scientific meeting (funding provided) and are expected to submit at least one journal manuscript during the fellowship year.

Specific Learning Objectives

  1. Obtain subspecialty expertise in the protocoling, technique, and interpretation of all aspects of cardiovascular and thoracic Imaging including CXR, Chest CT/MR, Lung Cancer Screening, Cardiac CT/MR, Vascular CT/MR and TAVR CT.
  2. Learn the epidemiology, diagnosis, pathology and treatment of the spectrum of thoracic pathologies, both malignant and non-malignant.
  3. Interact proficiently with surgeons, pulmonologists, cardiologists, pathologists, medical oncologists and radiation oncologists in providing multidisciplinary care.

4.  Become efficient with 3D post processing techniques, including basic functions like MPR, CPR, and 3D reformations as well as more advanced multimasking, 3D printing, and augmented reality.

5.  Opportunity to achieve Level 2 Cardiac CT and MR interpretation accreditation

6.  Be involved in all aspects of the Department’s academic and research activities, including the teaching of medical students and residents and participation in scholarly/research/quality improvement projects.
