Neuroradiology Fellowship Program

ACGME-Accredited, One Year Training

The ACGME-accredited neuroradiology fellowship is a one-year training program for individuals who have successfully completed a diagnostic radiology residency and are certified by or eligible for certification by the American Board of Radiology or hold an equivalent certificate. The training program is based at the University of Kentucky Medical Center, which also provides services to the Kentucky Children's Hospital. One fellow is accepted each year.

Scope of Training

The principal goal of the training program is to provide an organized, comprehensive, and supervised educational experience in all aspects of neuroradiology, including:

  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Computed tomography (CT)
  • Interventional procedures, including angiography and myelography
  • Head and neck radiology, spine, and brain imaging
  • Advanced central nervous system imaging, including MR spectroscopy, perfusion MRI, diffusion tensor Imaging, MR  and CT perfusion, and angiography

Training and supervision is provided by American Board of Radiology certified faculty neuroradiologists with subspecialty certificates of added qualification in neuroradiology.

Academics and Research

Fellows participate in all aspects of the department’s academic and research activities, including dedicated didactic conferences, Thursday morning conferences for interesting neuroradiology cases, advanced imaging, journal club and the completion of a mentored research and/or quality assurance project. Some of our neuroradiology faculty perform funded research enabling the fellow to become involved in ongoing research projects. In support of these pursuits, fellows are provided with instruction in research design/analytic methods and one-half day of dedicated non-clinical time per week, on average.

Collaborative Participation

The Neuroradiology Service is actively involved in clinical and academic collaborative activities with the departments of neurology, pediatrics, head and neck surgery (otolaryngology), neurosurgery, and neuropathology. In that vein, fellows also participate in a variety of multidisciplinary care conferences, including ENT-oncology, neuro-oncology, skull nase pathology, and pediatric tumor board conferences.  

Imaging Technology

Imaging technology available to the neuroradiology division at the University of Kentucky Medical Center include:

  • Two state-of-the-art 3Tesla and five 1.5Tesla MR scanners
  • One 64-detector CT scanner
  • Two dual-source energy, 192-detector CT scanners  
  • Three 128-detector CT scanners
  • One 40-detector CT scanner for interventional procedures
  • One portable CT scanner
  • Two biplane angiography suites, dedicated for diagnostic and interventional neuroangiography and spinal procedures
