“COVID saved my life.”
That’s not something you hear often, but for Shan Housekeeper, it’s a reality. The 44-year-old husband, father of three, and college football coach found himself facing a life-threatening medical condition during a time when the world was grappling with its own health crisis.
Like many during the pandemic, Housekeeper was forced to slow down.
On Oct. 8, the UK College of Medicine Department of Radiology hosted its inaugural research showcase.
Xiaoqin Jennifer Wang, MD, MS, associate professor of radiology and vice chair for research within the department, kicked off the event with a brief history of radiology and important clinical discoveries over the years.
The GME Emerging Leaders program is designed to provide a leadership development opportunity to Chief Residents and Fellows in their important new leadership role. As part of the six-month program, a variety of personal and professional leadership topics are facilitated by UK HealthCare’s Enterprise Learning team, in coordination with other leaders across the enterprise.

Burnout is a problem in any profession, but it is rampant in health care. This national problem has been evident recently as the COVID-19 pandemic pushed many learners, practitioners, faculty, and staff to the limit.
After medical school, some new doctors may start a preliminary year in medicine or surgery. Others choose a transitional year, combining medicine, surgery, and other rotations in medical training.

Mohamed Tarek Seleem Ahmed, MD, is a third-year resident at the UK College of Medicine Department of Radiology, through which he has gained vital clinical experience at UK Markey Cancer Center, the state’s only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated cancer center.
Following an extensive national search and interviews with highly qualified individuals, the College of Medicine is excited to welcome Na’Tasha Evans, PhD, MEd, as the new vice dean for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and associate professor in the department of behavioral science.
The College of Medicine’s clinical and basic science departments, centers, and educational offices are all working to develop more inclusive and equitable practices. Our Diversity and Inclusion Ambassadors are charged with leading these efforts.
