The University of Kentucky College of Medicine is excited to announce that Andrew “AJ” Gunn, MD, FSIR, has been chosen to serve as the new chair of radiology. Dr. Gunn will begin this leadership role at the UK College of Medicine Department of Radiology this summer.
Dr. Gunn is a tenured associate professor of radiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). At UAB, he has held various leadership roles in clinical operations, education, and research. Currently, he is the vice-chair of interventional affairs and division director of interventional radiology. He is also program director of the interventional radiology residencies at UAB.
Dr. Gunn will inherit a radiology department at the UK College of Medicine with an exceptional record of education and patient care, along with a growing research platform. In the fall of 2024, the department hosted its inaugural research showcase, providing an opportunity for medical students, graduate students, residents, and faculty to present research findings with the broader campus community.
Across 10 divisions, the UK College of Medicine Department of Radiology provides comprehensive radiological care for all ages. The department also offers three residency programs and seven fellowship programs to prepare future radiologists for a variety of specialties.
"Dr. Gunn joins a radiology department that is already on an impressive upward trajectory. His proven leadership and deep expertise in education, research, and clinical care will further elevate our standing as a leader in this field," said Dean Chipper Griffith, MD, MSPH.
Dr. Gunn has received dozens of awards and honors during his career, underscoring his teaching and clinical abilities. These include the Presidential Poster Award from the American College of Gastroenterology, UAB’s Educational Initiative Award, and a Distinguished Faculty Teaching Award (voted on by radiology residents).
He has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications and is recognized as a leader in interventional radiology, being regularly invited to speak at both national and international scientific meetings. Dr. Gunn is the national primary investigator of two multi-center, prospective clinical trials, demonstrating a commitment to advancing the practice of medicine through scientific investigation.
“I want to thank Dean Griffith, the leadership at the UK College of Medicine, and, most importantly, the physicians and staff in the department of radiology for entrusting me with this extraordinary opportunity within a strong and growing department. Throughout the process, I was consistently impressed with the dedication of individuals inside and outside of the department to a shared mission of providing state-of-the-art health care to Kentuckians. I am honored to participate with other UK physicians and staff to achieve that goal. My wife, Lyndsay, and daughter, Rosie, and I are looking forward to being part of such a terrific community in Lexington,” Dr. Gunn said.
Dr. Gunn received his Doctor of Medicine from the Sanford School of Medicine of the University of South Dakota. He completed a diagnostic radiology residency at the Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School, followed by an interventional radiology fellowship at Johns Hopkins University.
The UK College of Medicine would like to thank M. Elizabeth Oates, MD, for her many years as the chair of radiology. Also the Rosenbaum Endowed Chair of Radiology, Dr. Oates has remained dedicated to mentorship, professional development, community outreach, and advanced training.
We also would like to thank the search committee for its hard work and time commitment during the selection process.
