Appointment and Eligibility

Residents must be graduates of an LCME or AOA accredited medical school. Graduates of medical schools outside of the United States and Canada who are ECFMG certified and have full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in the state of Kentucky are also eligible. In addition, residents must complete a one-year, ACGME-approved (or equivalent) clinical internship year in emergency medicine, internal medicine, neurology, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, surgery or surgical specialties, or any combination of these specialties. The clinical year may also comprise a transitional year accredited by the ACGME or RCPSC. During the clinical year, elective rotations in diagnostic radiology must occur only in radiology departments with an ACGME-accredited diagnostic radiology residency program  or an RSPSC-accredited diagnostic radiology residency program and cannot exceed two months. All residents must be eligible for Kentucky medical licensure. Eight residents are appointed through the NRMP each year.

Selection

Resident selection will be supervised by the radiology residency program director with consultation from the department of radiology resident selection committee. The program will select eligible applicants on the basis of residency-related criteria such as preparedness, ability, aptitude, academic credentials, communication skills, and personal qualities such as motivation and integrity. The program will not discriminate with regard to sex, race, age, religion, color, national origin, disability, or any other applicable legally protected status. Materials solicited for review will include: curriculum vitae, common application form, medical school transcript(s), Dean’s letter, three letters of recommendation, personal statement, USMLE (or equivalent) transcripts and ECFMG certification (if applicable). All materials are transmitted via ERAS. Interviews are required.

For the 2024 ERAS cycle, our program will be collecting and reviewing data from applicants’ supplemental ERAS applications. Completion of the standard MyERAS application is a requirement; completion of the supplemental ERAS application is optional.

In its second year of use, the supplemental ERAS application is designed to help applicants share more information about themselves and assist our program in finding applicants that fit our program’s setting and mission. There is no cost to applicants and participation is optional.

The supplemental ERAS application provides:

  • geographic preferences (by division and by urban or rural setting); 
  • information about an applicant’s most meaningful experiences and other impactful life events, if applicable; and
  • program signals

Our interview process will be 100% virtual, via Zoom. We will have a morning interview session and an afternoon interview session for majority of the dates.

FAQs

How many letters of recommendation do you require?

We require a minimum of three letters of recommendation. However, you may submit up to four letters.

Do you require a letter of recommendation from a radiologist or from the chair of radiology at my medical school?

No. The best letters of recommendation are from those who know you the best. This may be, for example, someone you did research with, or the attending on one of your third-year clinical rotations. We would prefer that the majority of your letters be from physicians who are able to address your abilities as a practitioner of medicine.

How many positions will you be offering this year?

We will be offering eight advanced positions (PGY 2) for July 2024 in this year’s match.

Do you require a preliminary year and, if so, is one offered with your program?

Yes, an accredited preliminary clinical year is required. Currently, we are not offering any categorical positions. However, the University does offer a preliminary year in general surgery as well as internal medicine. For additional information, please refer to the Department of Surgery website or the Department of Internal Medicine website. There are also several other preliminary programs available in the nearby cities of Louisville and Cincinnati.

Do you have a set cut-off score for the USMLE?

No, our program does not set a predetermined cut-off score in order to be considered for an interview. We do not use any hard cut-off criteria to filter the applications, as we prefer to consider you and your application as a whole. A below-average Step score would not exclude the otherwise-outstanding applicant from consideration. Please keep in mind that the application process is very competitive, however.

Are USMLE Step II scores required to obtain an interview?

USMLE Step II scores are required to be ranked. 

How and when do you notify candidates of interview invitations?

In general, the majority of our interview invitations are sent via ERAS shortly after the release of the medical student performance evaluations in October.
