In October 2016, a team of UK Department of Radiology faculty radiologists, Drs. Francesca Beaman, Joseph Owen, Margaret Szabunio and Marianna Zagurovskaya (team leader), traveled to the developing country of Kazakhstan to enrich Radiology education. They conducted a 10-day multi-subspecialty Radiology seminar for radiologists-in-training and practicing radiologists. The seminar was hosted by The Kazakh Institute of Oncology and Radiology (KIOR) in the city of Almaty. It was initiated by Dr. Zagurovskaya under the auspices of the RAD-AID Kazakhstan Chapter started in 2016. The primary mission of RAD-AID is to aid global Radiology and Radiation Medicine development via projects in 175 countries with significant collaboration from leading institutions within and outside of the United States. The University of Kentucky is the first institution in our region to provide Radiology enrichment in developing countries. The UK team lectured and delivered case conferences on contemporary topics in Abdominal & Pelvic, Breast, Musculoskeletal, and Thoracic Radiology with an emphasis on approaches to detection and follow-up of neoplastic conditions and mimickers. “Hands-on” experience with ultrasound-guided biopsy and virtual colonoscopy were included in the seminar. The UK radiologists discussed resident education and offered suggestions for curricular improvement. KIOR Radiology residents and faculty appreciated the on-site advising regarding several ongoing research projects. A collection of radiology books was donated by faculty members from the UK Department of Radiology. More than 100 participants from Kazakhstan and the neighboring country of Kyrgyzstan attended the seminar. It was a great success as evidenced by active audience participation and nearly 100% positive feedback. The attendees were impressed with the quality and content of material and the expertise of the faculty. The group received favorable suggestions to continue the seminars on an annual basis with inclusion of other Radiology subspecialties.
