UK Hosts Inaugural Regional Medical Student Fair

On Saturday August 26th, 2017 the University of Kentucky Department of Radiology hosted an inaugural medical student fair, RAD FLiCKs (Radiology Medical Student Fair hosted by the University of Louisville, University of Cincinnati, and University of Kentucky). Over 50 students attended from UK, U of L, UC and KYCOM and spent the day interacting with over 20 faculty members from the three different campuses. In the morning, students had the opportunity to hear directly from each of the school’s department chair and learn about some common misconceptions about practicing radiology. In the afternoon, participants had lunch while they played in a team competition and saw interesting radiologic cases. The bulk of the afternoon was spent engaging in hands-on workshops, allowing them to practice and observe musculoskeletal ultrasounds, perform image guided biopsies, and try their hand at commonly used catheters and devices used by interventional radiologists. One of the attendees wrote in a follow up survey, “[I] appreciate the short lectures. I think this format made is easier to stay focused, while ensuring that several important topics were covered”. Another wrote, “I really thought the workshops were great! Most conferences don’t have that sort of hands on interaction, so I really appreciated getting to see the different techniques and procedures radiologists have at their disposal” The entire event was free for students! Breakfast and lunch were catered and there was plenty of “swag” including free t-shirts, plastic water bottles, pens and notebooks, and the American College of Radiology tote bags. Plans are already underway for RAD FLiCKs 2018, which will be hosted at the University of Cincinnati.
