Dr. Tessa Cartwright, chief fellow in the University of Kentucky’s division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, took second place honors in the 2017 Research Scholarship Competition sponsored by the International College of Surgeons – US Section (ICS-US) on Saturday, June 17 in Seattle.

The competition was one of several events held during the ICS-US’ Annual Surgical Update over the weekend.

In late July, Dr. Michael J. Cavnar commenced his clinical practice in Surgical Oncology and General Surgery as a faculty member with the University of Kentucky’s Markey Cancer Center and the Department of Surgery.

The University of Kentucky’s Department of Surgery is pleased to welcome a new surgeon, Sam Tyagi, MD, to its vascular and endovascular surgery faculty beginning in late July 2017.

Though born in Canada, by the time Sam Tyagi had reached age 7, his family had lived in Stony Brook, New York and Columbia, Missouri before finally settling in Jackson, Mississippi to accommodate his father’s, Suresh Tyagi, Ph.D., various appointments as an NIH-funded researcher and professor in physiology and biophysics .

The 20-week ultrasound appointment privileges parents to a sneak-peek of their baby growing inside the womb.

First-time parents Anna (Seitz) and Evan Ciannello went into their 20-week appointment expecting to see their baby’s physical features taking perfect form — 10 tiny fingers, one wrinkled nose, two eyes yet to open and a complete mouth, perhaps sucking a thumb. But the 20-week ultrasound appointment brought unwelcome news to the couple.

The University of Kentucky Cardiothoracic Surgery Clinic earned the Patient Experience Award for the third quarter of 2017. It is the fourth time the clinic has won the award.

The award, which is determined from the results of national patient satisfaction surveys, placed the clinic among the highest rated in the United States, according to the UK Office of Patient Experience.

The trauma and acute care surgery section of the UK Department of Surgery recently announced that Tim Horrell, MD is the recipient of the 2018 EAST Travel scholarship.

On May 1, the UK Department of Surgery welcomed Dr. Jonathan Kiev as the newest faculty member in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery. He is the second thoracic surgeon to join the division in 2017.

Jamie Ward, MPH, undergraduate surgery education coordinator with the Department of Surgery, was named an honorary member of the UK Medical School class of 2017. She wore cap and gown and joined her fellow classmates for graduation ceremonies on Saturday, May 13.

The Department of Surgery annual teaching awards presentation after Grand Rounds on May 3 included recognition of many faculty and residents. The department excels in educational efforts, as demonstrated by consistent great reviews from residents and students. Each year, the department recognizes some faculty and residents for their outstanding contributions to the educational mission of the department, but we could easily recognize many more.

University of Kentucky Surgical Oncologist Dr. Mark Evers was recently elected into the Association of American Physicians (AAP). AAP is a nonprofit organization founded for the purpose of advancing scientific and practical medicine and is composed of members who are leading senior physician-scientists. Its goals include the pursuit of medical knowledge and the advancement through experimentation and discovery of basic and clinical science and their application to clinical medicine.

After releasing news about Department of Surgery providers featured in the “Making the Rounds” series of video featurettes produced by UK HealthCare marketing, two additional videos were found on the YouTube social media channel featuring transplant surgeon Michael Dailey, MD and plastic surgery division chief Henry Vasconez.

Nationally acclaimed vascular surgeon, Jack Cronenwett, MD, will be the featured speaker at the second annual Gordon Hyde Lectureship in Vascular Surgery on Wednesday morning, April 19, from 7 – 8 am in the Pavilion A Auditorium of the UK Chandler Medical Center.

There will be a breakfast reception about 30 minutes prior to the lecture just outside the auditorium, so attendees are advised to come early.

The University of Kentucky selected Stuart Tobin, MD, Division of Dermatology, and Sam Carmichael, MD, PGY4 in General Surgery, to be among its latest faculty and resident inductees into the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Medical Society. Dr. Tobin and Dr. Carmichael were notified of their high honor on Saturday morning, March 11, from Dr. Charles “Chipper” Griffith, Vice Dean for Education in the UK College of Medicine.
