Program Mission

The Complex Surgical Oncology Fellowship at the University of Kentucky (UK) is an ACGME-accredited two-year program providing comprehensive training and experience in the broad spectrum of Oncology. Program fellows will benefit from the expertise of a seasoned faculty in the Division of Surgical Oncology and the wealth of resources and research from UK's Markey Cancer Center, Kentucky's only NCI-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. Training will emphasize multidisciplinary care for patients with underlying benign or malignant conditions.

A unique emphasis of this program will be exposure to health disparities related to patients living in impoverished conditions in significant medically underserved areas of the Commonwealth's Appalachian region and far western Purchase area.

On completion of the program, fellows will have developed the skills and knowledge of competent surgical oncologists who can care for patients in an academic, community, or private practice setting.

Program Goals

  • Train competent surgeons who provide appropriate and safe surgical care for patients with benign and malignant conditions of the breast, skin, soft tissue, gastrointestinal, pancreaticobiliary, and endocrine systems and who are prepared to enter into independent practice in any professional setting.
  • Train surgeons to understand their role and can skillfully coordinate multidisciplinary evaluation and treatment of patients with underlying cancer diagnoses in their care.
  • Emphasize patient empathy in discussing end-of-life care with focus on patient centered decision making.
  • Foster an environment of inquiry to support research and advancement in the field of surgical oncology.
