Wearable Breast Pump Program

The Wearable Breast Pump program gives surgery providers the option to use breast pumps during surgical cases. This program is available for all department of surgery faculty, residents, and staff.

Device

Willow Breast pump available for "check out" free of charge for all mothers (faculty, staff, admin, residents) returning from maternity leave.

Contact

Contact Crystal Totten prior to delivery and then 2 weeks prior to return to work to coordinate.

Use

Use for 4-6 months rotations pending need.

The UK Department of Surgery aims to provide educational resources, mentorship opportunities, and community engagement activities for everyone. 

Explore our outreach initiatives for high school, college, and medical students below. 
 

High School

The University of Kentucky and the Department of Surgery have several opportunities to engage high school students and encourage them to consider a career in surgery:

  1. The Department of Surgery Vice Chairs of Professionalism and Integrity organize several community events each year for middle school and high school students to promote surgery through faculty lectures and skill-based workshops: Lexington Leadership Foundation - AMACHI and
    Frederick Douglass High School - Academy of Health Sciences. 
  2. Observation and Learning Opportunities are available through the UK Healthcare Office of Observation and Learning Experience (OLE)
    (you must be at least 16 years old to enter an operating room or emergency department)
  3. The College of Medicine offers free pipeline opportunities at varying levels of education, from high school through undergraduate studies. Each program includes unique activities that aid in preparing students for a career in medicine.
  4. The Markey Cancer Center’s Appalachian Career Training in Oncology (ACTION) Program offers Appalachian Kentucky high school and undergraduate students enrolled at the University of Kentucky the opportunity to gain cancer research, clinical, outreach and education experiences that will enrich their interest in pursuing a biomedical career with a focus on cancer-related careers. 

College

The University of Kentucky and the Department of Surgery have several opportunities to engage pre-health majors to consider a career in surgery.  

  1. The Ward O. Griffen Surgical Society is a student-operated specialty interest group at the University of Kentucky that hosts several workshops a year for college students to promote surgery through faculty lectures and skill-based workshops. 
  2. Observation and Learning Opportunities are available through the UK Healthcare Office of Observation and Learning Experience (OLE)
  3. Hues in Medicine is a student organization at the University of Kentucky for minorities who are interested in pursuing careers in the healthcare field. Hues in Medicine’s mission is to encourage the growth of minorities in the healthcare field while also providing guidance and mentorship for prospective students. PI participates in hands-on suturing and laparoscopic skills training sessions as part of yearly meetings. 
  4. Student National Medical Association - PI faculty participated in suturing and laparoscopic skills training sessions as part of Region X conference 2023 for K12-Medical students.

Medical Students

The Department of Surgery promotes a positive learning environment for all medical students to thrive. To recruit residents from all experiences and backgrounds, the Department offers a Visiting Student Acting Internship (AI) Scholarship.  

PI participates in events and leadership with the UKCOM LGBTQ+ Advisory Committee.
