Division of Surgical Oncology
Surgical oncology is responsible for the care of patients requiring operative intervention for the treatment of cancer. The division is closely involved with the care of patients at the UK Markey Cancer Center. Surgical oncology also manages multidisciplinary clinics for breast disease, gastrointestinal malignancy, and melanoma.
Residents rotate on this service during PGY-1, PGY-3, and PGY-5, and gain considerable exposure to the surgical management of breast and colorectal carcinoma, melanoma, and sarcomas. The service offers significant experience in head and neck cancers that is not commonly found in other general surgery programs. The section is actively involved in research investigating cancer immunology, the role of biological response modifiers in the treatment of head and neck cancer, and translational research applying gene therapy to malignancies. Cancer education research is also a focus within the section.
