The annual Francis Massie and Andrew R. Pulito Awards were presented at Senior Awards Night before graduation from the University of Kentucky Medical School in May. David Keeven was presented the Massie Award and Teddy Huerta was selected as the recipient of the Andrew R. Pulito Award.

The Francis Massie Award is given annually to one senior medical student who demonstrates outstanding potential as a physician within the Department of Surgery. This year’s recipient is David Keeven. He will be pursuing his general surgery residency at the University of Louisville. Dr. Jitesh Patel, director of the 4th year Medical Student Clerkships, presented Dr. Keeven with the award.

The Massie Award is named in honor of Dr. Francis Massie whose extensive leadership included service as President of the Fayette County Medical Society and the Kentucky Surgical Association. Dr. Massie also served on the Kentucky Medical Education Foundation. The organization was a catalyst to the establishment of the University of Kentucky Medical School by Governor Albert “Happy” Chandler.

The Andrew Pulito Award is presented to a student who exemplifies excellence in academics, clinical care, leadership, and teaching in surgery. It is named in recognition of Dr. Pulito’s decades of service as an outstanding pediatric surgeon and general surgery clerkship director.

The 2019 recipient, Dr. Teddy Huerta, matched into the general surgery residency program at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Florida.
