The division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Kentucky recently welcomed Dr. Suresh Keshavamurthy, MD, FACS, FRCS Cardiothoracic surgeon, as the newest member of its faculty.

Dr. Keshavamurthy brings to UK over 20 years of experience in Cardiac surgery practice and teaching from a number of leading national and international institutions.

Dr. Keshavamurthy will serve on the UK Healthcare Adult Cardiac Surgery team, the Lung Transplantation team with the UK Transplant Center, and the Heart Failure and Mechanical Circulatory support as well as ECMO team with the Gill Heart and Vascular Surgery Institute.

For the last three years, Dr. Keshavamurthy based his clinical practice with Temple University Health System and served as a member of the surgery faculty at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine in Philadelphia. Prior to that appointment, he spent eight years at the Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, Ohio, which is among the leading health systems in Heart and Vascular care.

In all, he has well over 10 years of experience as a cardiac surgeon in the United States.

He earned his medical degree from JJM Medical College, Davangere, Karnataka, India and was awarded eight gold medals at the Mysore University Convocation for his academic performance. He then completed a general surgical residency at the prestigious PGIMER (Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research) Chandigarh, India and subsequently Cardiothoracic training at the AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) New Delhi, which is the premier medical institution in India.

He has served as an assistant professor at the Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute (SRMC & RI) Chennai, India and as consultant cardiac surgeon at the Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, Madras Medical Mission, Chennai, India. He obtained further training in Wellington, New Zealand and Perth, Australia as Registrar, Cardiothoracic Surgery before moving to the USA.

In the United States, Dr. Keshavamurthy is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, American College of Chest Physicians, and the American College of Cardiology. He’s also a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Glasgow, Edinburgh, and England.

He has a passion for teaching medical students, residents and fellows and hopes to contribute to the knowledge base at UK. In addition, he looks forward to providing quality surgical care to adult cardiac patients and those with end stage lung and heart disease in Kentucky and UK’s surrounding service area.
