We are pleased to announce UK’s Obstetrics and Gynecology (OBGYN) specialty ranked as a top national specialty program for the second year in a row in the 2024-2025 Best Hospitals rankings by U.S. News & World Report. The publication also ranked The University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler Hospital at UK HealthCare as the No. 1 hospital in Kentucky for the ninth year in a row, and gynecological cancer surgery received a “high performing” designation.

These rankings reinforce UK HealthCare’s commitment to creating a healthier Kentucky. The department’s dedication to providing state-of-the-art comprehensive care for women in Kentucky and beyond contributed to the department achieving this prestigious milestone.

“Receiving this national recognition for our program’s excellence in women’s health care is an honor, and this remarkable achievement is built upon the solid foundation laid out by my predecessors,” said Emily DeFranco, DO, professor and chair of the UK College of Medicine Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. “As chair, I am committed to driving our program forward through research, education, and providing the highest quality evidence-based practice and unwavering compassion to our patients.”

The department provides a full range of office and surgical obstetric and gynecologic services, including subspecialty services in high-risk obstetrics, gynecologic oncology, urogynecology, and minimally invasive gynecologic surgery. With outreach clinics located throughout the Commonwealth, patients have access to our specialty and sub-specialty care such as the Ovarian Cancer Screening Program (OVS), and high-risk obstetric care through the Kentucky Angels Telehealth program.

U.S. News evaluated nearly 5,000 hospitals across 15 specialties and 20 procedures and conditions; only 11% of evaluated hospitals earned a Best Hospitals ranking. The Best Hospitals Specialty rankings methodology and Procedures and Conditions ratings methodology measure patient outcomes using data from millions of records provided by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. This year, among other methodology refinements, U.S. News incorporated new data on care provided to patients with Medicare Advantage insurance and on care provided to outpatients, nearly doubling the number of patients included in its annual data analysis. The Procedures and Conditions ratings are based entirely on objective quality measures.
