The Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics (APGO) recognized Rachel Saunders, MD, as a 2023 APGO Humanism in Teaching Award recipient. Saunders is an associate professor in The UK College of Medicine Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
This award honors ob-gyn educators from APGO member departments who are outstanding role models in the teaching of ob-gyn. Dr. Saunders' nomination states: “Dr. Saunders has shown humanism in teaching by placing value on medical student education and respect for each student’s success. The characteristics she possesses are honesty, respect, empathy, compassion, and altruism. Dr. Saunders has shown these attributes by creating her own mission statement for the clerkship, educating on the history of women’s health, maintaining an inclusive, safe place for all learners, and starting a near-peer mentoring program between third- and fourth-year students.”
The APGO Humanism in Teaching Awardees are recognized as not only skilled clinicians but also as outstanding educators who intentionally foster compassionate, respectful, and collaborative relationships with learners, healthcare teams, patients, and their families with the ultimate goal of engendering shared and preference-based medical decisions, greater patient satisfaction with care, and improved outcomes.
