For all students wanting to participate in the observation and learning program at UK, there are required documents you must submit in order to participate in the program. For the best experience, plan to attend the whole day if possible. You will need to find a faculty sponsor who is an active UK Healthcare employee (excludes relatives). From there, you will need to email the main med-student email, OphthMedStudents@uky.edu, and state which faculty member you have spoken to. Once we have confirmed the dates and times of your visit, we will reach out to you on what items you will need prior to your visit and send you your schedule.

Please visit the Office of Observation & Learning Experience to submit an onboarding request, here.

Observation and Learning Experience

In support of our commitment to career development, education and training of health care professionals, UK HealthCare provides individuals with observations and learning experiences in various clinical areas and business professional departments. Multiple learning opportunities are provided by UK HealthCare and onboarded by the office of Observation and Learning Experience (OLE).

We do not offer in person tours outside of a traditional rotation during interview season.  This may sound counterintuitive, but this policy is with the applicant in mind – we do not want to create a situation similar to many others in the application and interview process where an applicant worries it is not in their best interest or could somehow be used against them if they do/not engage in certain activities.

We do, however, want to create a welcoming environment and opportunity for any interested applicants to view our facilities given the virtual interview experience.  With that in mind, if you or other applicants have the desire to come and tour our department during the open house window (first few weeks of January), please let us know after program rank lists are submitted and we’d be happy to arrange something.
