Gifts at Work

The gift of this scholarship is both generous and inspiring. Your support for my medical education represents an investment; I mean this not only in the financial sense of the word, although that of course is one significant component. In addition, I consider your investment to be an investment of trust. A trust that I, along with all the other scholarship recipients of this medical school class, will honor. I will strive to make the most of my years here at the University of Kentucky. Along with this solemn pledge, this scholarship carries with it a strong sense of reinforcement and support. It is deeply satisfying and humbling to realize that there are people who I have never even met before who have staked so much to help me in my path toward a career as a physician. For this I deeply thank you.

As I reflect on this scholarship, I recognize that my life is not the only one that is being affected by this gift. In medical school, we are taught not only a body of scientific knowledge, but also the character and conduct of being a physician. Regardless of whether we remember or forget the many particular facts we learn during these four years, we will always hold with us the ways and manners in which doctors speak and act toward patients. These lessons with remain with us throughout our professional careers. Thus, your generous gifts truly touches upon not only our lives, but the lives of all the future patients we will see in the years to come. I am sure you made this same consideration when you decided to support the College of Medicine and its students. For this, I thank you for both your foresight and your extraordinary generosity.

Annual Giving Initiatives

Scholarship Support

Competition among medical schools for highly qualified students is intense and as the cost of medical education continues to rise, the availability of financial aid is often a determining factor in a student's choice. Scholarships provide flexible funds for the Dean and Scholarship Committee to invest in the recruitment of qualified students. These funds help ensure that the University of Kentucky will be competitive in attracting the best students while enabling current students to make the best choices for the medical careers, based on their interests and talents, and not their financial limitations.

In the 2010-2011 academic year, 46 percent of medical students received a scholarship and/or financial aid award ranging from $600 - $79,553.  The average debt for the Class of 2011 is $148,156.

Student Activities Support

These gifts support student led initiatives such as Hispanic Health Fair as well as the Emery A. Wilson Academic Enrichment Program and the White Coat Ceremony.

Residency Support

Gifts to residency programs enable departments to provide trainees with various opportunities to enhance their UK residency experience. Most importantly, your gifts help the College to continue attracting the brightest and most enthusiastic students to careers in clinical care, education, and research.

Research Support

The University of Kentucky College of Medicine faculty members conduct basic, clinical and transitional research in a multitude of areas including aging, cardiovascular disease, cancer, obesity and diabetes, substance abuse, neuroscience and more. Research discovery funds enable talented investigators to pursue research that might later attract grants from the N.I.H or private foundations.

Giving Societies and Programs

Alumni and friends provide unrestricted and restricted gifts for scholarships and fellowships, research, programs, lectureships and professorships. Together, these annual gifts provide steady resources that are absolutely critical to our leadership in medicine. We thank these donors for investing in our medical education, research and service missions.

The Leadership Circle is the special recognition society of the College of Medicine that honors individuals who have given $1,000 or more cumulatively to any area of the College of Medicine from July 1 to June 30.

  • Associate: $1,000 to $2,499
  • Advocate: $2,500 to $4,999
  • Partner: $5,000 to $9,900
  • Dean's Society: $10,000 or more

Members are invited to participate in educational opportunities and special events. Additionally members may receive recognition in the giving societies of the University or other areas within medicine to which their gift was made.

Phonathon

Phonathon is the easiest way to pledge your support to the College of Medicine. Make sure we have your phone number on record so that you won’t miss our call.

We host two calling sessions each fiscal year. The first session is in November and the second session is in March.

We only call alumni who have not yet made a gift or pledge to the College of Medicine in the current fiscal year. If you pledge in the fall, we will not call you in the spring.

Phonathon is an essential part of our annual giving campaign, enabling us to connect with alumni of the College of Medicine. The 2010-2011 phonathon raised more than $179,146 from 780 donors.

Class Reunion Gifts

Giving to the College of Medicine is a tangible way for alumni to testify to the value of their experience and the impact it had on their personal and professional life.

During your reunion year, honor current and future students by making a gift to the College of Medicine. Your gift, regardless of the amount, makes an immediate impact on the College. Your gift will count toward your class's Reunion Gift and help increase your class's donor participation rate.
