What Is Diabetic Retinopathy?

Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that affects the eyes. It occurs when high blood sugar damages the blood vessels in the retina, a light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. Over time, this damage can lead to blurred vision, floaters, difficulty seeing colors, and vision loss. If left untreated, diabetic retinopathy can progress to permanent blindness.

Diabetes continues to rise at alarming rates both nationally and within Kentucky. In the United States, more than 34 million people are living with diabetes, and many more may have elevated blood sugar levels without knowing it. Because diabetes significantly increases the risk of serious complications (heart disease, kidney failure, stroke, and vision loss), early detection and regular screening are critical.

Our tele-ophthalmology program makes screening simple and accessible by allowing patients to have retinal images taken during routine primary care visits. These images are securely analyzed using advanced technology and reviewed by eye care specialists when needed, ensuring timely diagnosis and referral for treatment.

Teleophthalmology Eye Screening Program

The UK Teleophthalmology Screening Program is dedicated to building a statewide network of partnerships between primary care clinics and UK ophthalmology, as well as other eye care clinics, committed to delivering high-quality, accessible eye care to communities across the Commonwealth.

By integrating advanced retinal imaging and FDA-approved screening technologies with the clinical expertise of the University of Kentucky Department of Ophthalmology, our program expands access to early detection of eye disease, particularly in rural and underserved areas.

Our initial focus is diabetic retinopathy screening, with plans to broaden services as the network grows.

We now provide consultations and appointments via telemedicine for Glaucoma as well, at our UK Manchester Eye Clinic.
