UK GO

UK GO has established several regional and international partnerships that may provide unique learning experiences to residents interested in Global ophthalmology. Regionally, UK GO directs a large academic-based network that provides diabetic retinopathy screening services to underserved populations and serve as the platform for high-quality implementation science research.  Internationally, we have partnered with ophthalmology institutions in Guatemala, Kenya, India, Ecuador, Haiti, and Eswatini to build capacity in eye care in these countries. UK GO can provide our trainees with opportunities to experience global health delivery and research in different cultural and economic environments in all these systems.

Being on the UK GO track has been a tremendous learning experience that has hands-down made me a vastly better physician. The track emphasizes how to truly invest in underserved communities to enhance long-term health outcomes and infrastructures, not just short-term results. I’ve had the chance to provide eye care in Guatemala and Kenya, gain experience leading local community outreaches, and engage in research projects on healthcare access. Through its generous resources and mentorship, the UK GO program has helped me not only understand global eye care at a much deeper level but also provide more effective care to all my patients that is informed by their social, economic, and cultural contexts. UK GO is an incredible asset to our residency.

The UK Global Ophthalmology Residency Track has been one of the most meaningful parts of my training. Through volunteer clinics across Kentucky and a month-long experience at Tenwek Hospital, I gained exposure to high-volume pathology, resource-conscious care with sustainable local partnerships, and the profound impact ophthalmology can have on underserved communities. The experience strengthened both my clinical skills and my perspective on patient care, service, and global health. I am incredibly grateful for the mentorship, opportunities, and lifelong lessons this program has provided and will continue to use them frequently in practice.
