Learner Summary
Why did you choose the University of Kentucky?
I chose the University of Kentucky because of the people and the incredible pathology. During my interview and away rotation, it was obvious that the residents and faculty genuinely looked out for one another, and I knew it was the kind of place that would challenge me while also supporting me. I wanted to train somewhere with a high level of autonomy, broad surgical experience, and exposure to complex cases that would prepare me for any career path in ophthalmology.
What do you like about your program?
The pathology and patient encatchment area at UK are unmatched. It's not unusual for patients to be helicoptered in from across the region just to be evaluated by the ophthalmology resident on call. That level of responsibility accelerates your growth and gives you confidence in your training.
One experience that has stayed with me was performing a tap and inject on a young patient with type 1 diabetes and neovascular glaucoma. Watching the patient's pain improve and seeing the relief they experienced made me incredibly grateful for the skills this program has given me and reminded me of the privilege of being an ophthalmologist.
Beyond the clinical training, what makes UK special is the people. I still remember during my away rotation, drinking energy drinks and singing along to country music with my upper-level resident in the call room between consults. Those moments reflected the culture of the program: hardworking, supportive, and genuinely enjoyable to be a part of. I have always felt that this program has my back, whether in the clinic, the operating room, or during challenging moments on call.
What are your hobbies?
Outside of ophthalmology, I love traveling and try to travel overseas about three times a year whenever my schedule allows. I'm also love cycling, enjoy discovering new coffee shops and restaurants, and have a passion for perfumery. I'm admittedly a bit of a fragrance snob and enjoy learning about the niche artistry, history, chemistry, and craftsmanship behind different perfumes.
