New funding for PIs Dr. Brittany Levy, Dr. Eric Rellinger, and Dr. Marlene Starr have kicked off FY 24 research

In a year of record-setting research funding at the University of Kentucky, the department of surgery contributed over $1.6 million in federal grants and industry awards, a 47 percent increase from fiscal year 2022.

The National Institutes of Health announced in August the award of a new R21 research grant from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) to a UK multi-PI research team including Marlene Starr, PhD, Division Chief of Research and Preetha Shridas, PhD from Internal Medicine.

UK researchers Hiroshi Saito, PhD, and David Rodgers, PhD, were among the recipients of over three dozen funding awards from the Kentucky IDeA Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence (KY INBRE). Both researchers received KY INBRE Electron Microscopy (EM) vouchers to assist them in diabetes and obesity research.

Brittany Levy, MD, was recently appointed to a committee within the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Her new role will allow her to help improve the clinical learning environment for graduate medical trainees across the country.
