Program Information

Welcome to the University of Kentucky Pediatrics Residency Program. Kentucky Children’s Hospital and the UK College of Medicine Department of Pediatrics are committed to achieving excellence in patient care and medical education.  Our training is designed to give a solid foundation in general pediatrics and prepare residents for the next stage of their career, including fellowship training, private practice, or academic medicine. Our hospital is a referral center for eastern and central Kentucky and we care for patients with a broad spectrum of illnesses and a diverse pediatric patient population. Our pediatric faculty is dedicated to the enrichment of our resident's education and represent a variety of community and academic pediatrics in addition to multiple subspecialties. 

At UK, we also have three combined training programs:
 

  • Internal Medicine and Pediatrics 
  • Pediatrics, Psychiatry and Child Psychiatry
  • Child Neurology


One of the strengths of our program is the collegial interaction among residents in all training programs. Along with outstanding clinical experiences, our program offers weekly scheduled didactics, a board review series, Sim Lab, and mock code workshops. Residents also participate in quality improvement and scholarly activities and have the opportunity to attend local and national academic meetings.

We strive for continuous enhancement of our educational programs and the experiences of our trainees. We encourage our residents and faculty to suggest changes that can improve the way that we care for patients and the way that we educate future physicians. Residents take ownership of their program by participating in the Residency Curriculum Committee, Graduate Medical Education Council, the Advocacy Committee (AdvoCats), and various interdisciplinary committees within the Kentucky Children’s Hospital. Several of our residents also represent this program nationally as delegates to the local and national annual American Academy of Pediatrics conferences.

Additional Educational Opportunities

UK Pediatrics also offers unique programs directed at child advocacy and international health. Along with participating in community advocacy projects, each year our residents have the opportunity to advocate for children’s health care issues with our state legislators.

The Child Advocacy Today (CAT) program provides legal counsel for our patients undergoing difficulty with housing, education services, or family situations. Residents and faculty travel to Ecuador, Ethiopia, Kenya, and India each year to provide healthcare to the underserved children in these areas, and in 2013 we began offering a global health tract to selected, interested residents.
