Hazard, Ky. (Mar. 24, 2014) –  Kentucky Homeplace has been recognized by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Healthy People 2020 initiative for their work to improve colorectal cancer screening rates.

Colorectal cancer is a serious concern in Kentucky, where the incidence and mortality rates for colorectal cancer are higher than the national average.

“Recent statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicate Kentucky has the third highest incidence of colon and rectal cancer in the nation,” said Dr. Fran Feltner, director of the UK Center of Excellence in Rural Health in Hazard.

To help address these issues, Kentucky Homeplace developed a colorectal cancer education component for their community health worker (CHW) program to educate and help residents access colorectal cancer screening services.
