Healthy People 2010 proposed that 75% of all employers should offer a Comprehensive Wellness Program (CWP) for their employees. CWP includes: 1) health education; 2) supportive social and physical work environment; 3) integration; 4) linkage; and 5) worksite screening and education.

The workplace is uniquely suited for implementing wellness programs because employees can receive information in a structured and familiar environment where social support and established channels of communication already exist. However, small businesses, particularly those in rural communities, often lack internal wellness expertise and resources compared to larger companies.
